Summer programs

By Stuti Saria

Summer programs at universities are an enriching way to explore new things during your summer. Current college students can use their summer to get ahead in their degrees or complete a minor. Summer programs can also be a great learning experience for adults who are interested in learning more. High school students can enhance their resumes, study a new subject, or get a head start on college by earning credit! If you have a specific major in mind, here are some great summer programs to consider:

1. Architecture

Carnegie Mellon University

CMU’s pre-college architecture program is an intensive summer program for students with a keen interest in architecture. It is open to all students of ages 16 and above, who are currently sophomores or juniors in high school and who are physically located in the United States. The program allows for enrollment in either 3 weeks or 6 weeks long sessions during the summer. Students need to complete an online application.

2. Journalism

Boston University

BU’s summer programs are open to all BU and non-BU students, working adults, as well as international college students and entering graduate students. Admission to Boston University is not required in order to register for the courses and there is no application!

High school students can also get a head start on college by participating in BU’s pre- college summer programs that grant upto 8 college credits.

3. Economics/Finance

Yale Summer Session

Yale Summer Session (YSS) offers a variety of courses and programs for Yale College credit. It is open to all Yale students, interested adults, as well as visiting students from other U.S. colleges and around the world. Yale also offers pre-college programs for high school students (rising seniors and graduates) who wish to earn Yale credit. While enrolled in the courses, qualified high school students will share the classroom with college students and will do college-level work. All students need to complete an application.

Georgia Tech

Transient students, who wish to take coursework that will transfer back to their home institution can register for classes at Georgia Tech, subject to the approval of the registrar at the home institution. Such students need to complete the Georgia Tech Non-Degree Application, which can be found here: https://application.gatech.edu/apply/

5. Engineering

University of California, Berkeley

UC Berkeley offers summer courses over seven different sessions of varying lengths.  Enrollment is open to everyone - current UCB students, other UC students, visitors from other US colleges, international students, newly admitted UCB transfer students and freshmen, and the community. High school students are eligible to enrol in Berkeley’s Pre-College Scholars program. All students except those who are currently enrolled at UC Berkeley need to complete an application.
