Soft skills, Power skills, durable skills, human skills, people skills, durable skills, E.Q.: Whatever you want to call them, they’re in big demand now. When giving an interview, it is important to demonstrate these soft skills to help through the interview process -

  • Enthusiasm and Collaboration- When applying for a job it is best to show enthusiasm as to why you want the job. Do not suppress your enthusiasm, and clearly state out the reasons why you think you are perfect for the job. Keep your reasons ready as to why you want to work here, what you could bring to the company and what draws you to the industry. The first impression is often the lasting impression, so make sure you present yourself well!

  • Clear Communication - The interviewer will assess your verbal skills and the way you carry out your ideas. You should be clear with your answers so that you do not keep rambling on to the interviewer. Concise and to the point answers are always appreciated. Communication also means listening well and answering aptly. If a question is posed in a different way, just take a moment to frame your answer, talk with confidence and try not to stutter.

  • Problem solving and empathy - If possible, use an example to back up your strengths and problem-solving ability from previous projects/ work life. Show that you are willing to take initiative so that they trust you with the work. The ability to identify with others and the problems they are battling with has become all the more important as we struggle with all sorts of personal and interpersonal problems brought on by the pandemic. The more specific you can be about the emotional dynamics you navigated, the better.

Here are some additional pointers to show that you have what it takes -

  • Have a good sense of humor during the interview. Lightening the mood can sometimes release the pressure.

  • Practice what you are going to be saying in front of the mirror before the interview, and see where you go wrong.

  • Look sharp and clean, creating a neat presence.

  • Enunciate and punctuate your sentences- don’t make it hard for the interviewer to understand.

  • Ask questions. Do not be afraid to ask a question- this will just show that you are interested in the company.

  • Do not get stressed- keep a calm mind so the interviewer knows you can deal well with stressful situations.

  • Research and know all about the company you are applying to. This will leave the interviewer with the impression that you know your work.
